Why a Knot?

A couple struggling in their marriage came to a German priest in the 17th century and he asked for the Blessed Mother’s intercession by holding up their marriage ribbon to her image and asking her to “untie the knots” of their marriage. It is said that the knot untied at that moment and the couple was reconciled. Mention of Mary as undoer of knots goes back to the 2nd century and has grown in popularity during Pope Francis’ pontificate.
