Why a Fly?
St. Bernard was a French Cistercian monk in the 12th century who was known for his study of scripture and theology, in particular the Song of Solomon. He wrote the memorare, as well, and founded many monasteries. One abbey the Cistericians were working to open was said to be filled with flies that exasperated the monks. It is said that St. Bernard finally declared, “I excommunicate all of you!”, as a joke, and the next morning all of the flies were dead.
