Why crossed candles?
Little is formally known about St. Blaise, but it is believed he was a physician prior to becoming a bishop. Many stories told of him saving the life of a young boy with a fishbone caught in his throat with prayer and the use of crossed candles at his neck. Even now on Blaise’s feast day (February 3) priests perform the Blessing of Throats.
