Why a noose?
St. Edmund was a revert English-born Catholic who became a Jesuit after persecution against Catholics began under the reign of Elizabeth I. He and another Jesuit priest were the first to be sent back to English on mission in 1580. He was hunted down, eventually captured, held in the Tower of London, and was tortured, hanged, drawn, and quartered after refusing to apostatize. The noose represents the tool used in his martyrdom.
