Why a Pencil?

St. Ireneus was a prolific writer and bishop in the 2nd century. He is known for writing his defense of the faith against the Gnostics that became a sort of systematic theology series called Against Heresies. The pencil symbolizes these many written contributions to theology and defense of the faith.
