Why a cloud over the moon?
John of the Cross was a 16th century Spanish mystic who, with the help of St. Teresa of Avila, set out to reform the Carmelite Order. He practiced extreme asceticism and wrote several spiritual books. Because of the attempts to reform the order, there were disputes among them and John was put in prison and tortured for 9 months, where he wrote his infamous “Dark Night of the Soul” which is usually depicted with the cloud over the moon.
