Why a Grill?
St. Lawrence was a deacon and suffered persecution and martyrdom under Emperor Valerian in the Early Church. Tradition says that when Lawrence realized he would soon suffer martyrdom, he gave in great amounts to the poor, widows, and orphans. The Roman Prefect ordered Lawrence to give this “treasure” to the emperor, but Lawrence refused and brought the poor, lame, orphans, and widows to him as the “treasure”. The prefect burned him on a grill with hot coals, and it is said that after laying there for some time, Lawrence declared, “I’m done! Turn me over!”.
