Why a broom?
Martin was born in Peru to a Spanish nobleman and a freed slave in the 16th century. He grew up without his father and was scorned by many because of his race. He became a servant boy at the Dominican convent (and eventually a 3rd Order Dominican) and he worked in the kitchen, the laundry, cut hair, and helped with medical aid. He served selflessly and faithfully, and assisted those with illnesses and those in need.
